5th-6thGrade, Latin, Music, Art, Choir, and Science Lab Teacher
Reuben Jansen holds a Bachelors of Arts from New Saint Andrews in Moscow, Idaho, where he studied everything from Latin to Astronomy and Philosophy in a classical education environment. Reuben has been studying music for 16 years and playing cello for 12 under the tutelage of Joel Stobbe, former cellist of the world renowned Borealis String Quartet. His musical awards and achievements at Langley Community Music School included the Iris Preston Award in 2009, the Purcell String Quartet Award in 2009, the Ian Hampton Award in 2010, the Duet Class Award in 2010, the String Quartet Award in 2010 and the Music Director’s Award in 2011 as well as The Helen Hagnes Mintix Memorial Cup in 2011. He has taught Latin and Math at Sandhills Classical Christian School, and Covenant Preparatory School. Reuben and his wife Annie have two children and live in West End, North Carolina.
3rd-4thGrade Teacher: Mr. Blake Willard
Blake Willard moved from California to North Carolina in 2011 to work at Cameron Boys Camp, a year-round wilderness camp school for troubled boys. He served there as a counselor and teacher, then as a groupwork supervisor for six years. Blake has been serving at Sandhills Presbyterian Church since May 2017, as the Assistant Director of Education. His primary responsibilities pertain to the discipleship of youth ministering to the families at Sandhills. Blake married his wife Sunny in March 2015, and asher name implies, she encompasses the brighter part of Blake’s life. Blake completed his B.A. in Biblical Studies from Azusa Pacific University, his Master’s in Education from Clark Summit University, and is currently completing his Doctorate in Educational Ministry from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
2ndGrade Teacher: Mrs. Cathy Marx
Cathy Crowell-Marx grew up in Wilmington, Ohio. She received her BS in Psychology with a minor in Biblical studies from Milligan College. In her early career, she worked in the social work and mental health fields. She has homeschooled her children and taught 3rdgrade and physical education at a Classical Christian school. For the last three years she has worked at Sandhills Presbyterian Church as the Pastoral secretary.
Her main claim to fame, though, has been that of a wife and stay at home Mother to her five children. She was married to the late LTC Michael Crowell and was a military spouse for seventeen years. She later married Roger Marx, in 2006, and God created a beautiful Brady bunch union. Her children are Hannah Fuqua (24), Son-in-law William (25), Jacob Crowell (22), Micah Crowell (19), Joshua Marx (19) and Samuel Marx (18). The high light of her year was becoming a Grandmother for the first time to precious baby, Michael. She considers her relationship with Christ the main focus of her life.
1stGrade Teacher: Mrs. Shakita Huerta
Mrs. Huerta loves the special personality of each student, seeing them get excited about learning and the “a-ha” moment that a student experiences when grasping a concept. Her favorite thing about CPS is the “family/school partnership”. She feels eternally blessed to be apart of the CPS atmosphere where the love for Christ and learning is the sole foundation in which the school stands on. Mrs. Huerta is currently working on her Bachelors of Art in Mathematics with a Concentration in Applied Math. When she isn’t teaching in the classroom she enjoys spending time with her husband, two children, as well as cooking, woodworking, gardening, crafting and reading.
Kindergarten Teacher: Mrs. Dana Skogen
Dana Skogen is the wife of Rev. Kevin D. Skogen of Sandhills Presbyterian Church. They have been married for 35 years. Mrs. Skogen is the mother of 6 grown married children and 16 grandchildren. Mrs. Skogen homeschooled all her children for various lengths of time, and the two youngest all the way through high school. She also started Classical Beginnings, a Classical Christian Grammar School on Lookout Mountain, Georgia in 2005. Under Mrs. Skogen’s leadership the school grew from Kindergarten through sixth grade before Mrs. Skogen moved to the Sandhills in 2009. Classical Beginnings continues to serve families today. Dana served on the board of Sandhills Classical Christian School for four years before diving back into teaching when Covenant Preparatory School opened its doors. Mrs. Skogen is the longest serving faculty member having taught from the school’s inception and is entering her 6th year as the kindergarten teacher.
Kindergarten Teacher’s Assistant: Ms. Melinda Rose Tart
Melinda Rose Tart received a B.S. from Nyack College in Youth Ministry and Intercultural Studies. She is currently obtaining a Masters in Biblical Studies from Alliance Theological Seminary. Her job experience varies from working with autistic individuals to serving children of all ages in daycares, schools, mission trips and camp ministries. Her hearts desire is to see young people grow in their faith and different life skills, especially focusing on classical art and the performing arts. She loves poetry, singing, sports, the and the outdoors. She has two boys ages 5 and 7 whom she loves dearly.
